How to make an Amleth (or other Viking) costume
We’ve provided some product recommendations for how to rock Amleth, but here are some general steps for building a costume:
- Shirtless Viking Look: Begin with a strong, confident attitude – that’s your first layer. Since Amleth often goes shirtless, you may choose to rock your natural look. For cooler weather, consider a brown faux fur vest, which you can craft by cutting a hole in the middle of a square piece of faux fur and slipping it over your head.
- Pants: Any pair of brown pants would work fine. For authenticity, you might want to go with a looser fit.
- Belt: Take a wide leather belt and wrap it around your waist. This will not only accentuate your Viking look but also give you a place to hang your weapons.
- Weapons: For Amleth’s weapons, purchase a toy Viking axe and sword. Make sure they are safe and abide by any local laws or regulations regarding costume weapons.
- Beard: If you can grow one, great! If not, there are many fake beards available online that can be attached with skin-friendly adhesive.
- Boots: Dark, sturdy boots will complete your outfit. Remember, you’re a Viking – comfort and utility come first!
- Arm and Leg Bands: Cut strips from the faux leather fabric, and wrap them around your arms and legs. Sew or glue the ends to secure them. These bands give a rugged warrior look.
- Shield: Using foam sheets, cut out a large circular shape for a shield. Paint it with metallic craft paint, and add Norse symbols or designs for extra flair.
- Weathering: To make your outfit look battle-worn, consider adding some wear and tear. Lightly rub sandpaper over your faux leather pieces to give them a weathered look.
Who is Amleth?
In the cinematic production of 2022 titled “The Northman,” the main character Amleth, embodies both the protagonist and anti-hero roles. Birthed from the lineage of the legendary Viking king Aurvandill, he barely manages to escape the clutches of death. This happens right after he becomes an unfortunate eyewitness to the brutal overthrow of his father by his Uncle Fjölnir, who subsequently vows to avenge his father’s unjust death.
As time passes, Amleth transforms into an intimidating Viking warrior. With this newfound strength and determination, he sets out on a daunting mission to retaliate against his father’s usurper. During this quest, he establishes an unexpected connection with Olga, a slave of Slavic origin.
“The Northman” brings to life the tale of a vengeful quest that intertwines with mystical forces, culminating in Amleth’s predicted ascension to the heavenly realm of Valhalla. The narrative is centered around the legend of Amleth, a character deeply rooted in medieval Scandinavian lore. This legend, however, remained relatively unknown on the global stage for many centuries.
The dawn of the 17th century brought with it William Shakespeare’s renowned tragedy, “Hamlet,” which effectively catapulted the legend of Amleth into international recognition. Much like the eponymous character in Shakespeare’s play, Amleth’s story in “The Northman” is a dramatic exploration of themes such as revenge, honor, and the complex dynamics of power and kinship.
