Patrick Bateman is a fictional character who appears in Bret Easton Ellis’ novel American Psycho and its film version as the evil protagonist and narrator. He’s a wealthy, materialistic yuppie and Wall Street investment banker who also works as a serial killer in his spare time. Bateman has also appeared in a few additional Ellis novels, as well as their film and stage adaptations. Bateman’s physical and mental health deteriorates over the course of the novel, until by the end he has become a sadistic killer who murders people as an act of revenge for his own perceived failures.

Because of how incredibly horrifying Bateman’s persona is, and even more so with a second viewing, he is the cornerstone of what makes American Psycho so wonderful. He’s a huge fan of Huey Lewis and the News, which is music I’ve come to appreciate lately. I threw on Sports the other day, which struck me as extremely 80s groovy, and also quite wholesome, and now I get what all of those white collar white dudes were up to back then.
