Steal His Look: Ryan Gosling’s Ken from “Barbie” movie meme

How to make a Ryan Gosling Barbie Movie Ken Doll Costume

I get pretty sharp 80’s/early 90’s vibes off of the Ryan Gosling interpretation of Ken. There’s just something about the guy that radiates synthwave, mostly from his performances is Drive and Blade Runner 2049. Now Barbie just flips him to a less edgy, more upbeat style from a similar era. Gotta get your Calvin Kleins showing, and the open jean shirt is not something everyone can rock. You may want to buy some fake abs for your Halloween party. Finally, to complete the ensemble, you do need to get your hair looking bleach-blonde, so go for some hair dye wax or consider a toupe.

Classic Ken Look

  1. Hair: Ken’s blonde, neatly styled hair is a key feature of his look. Depending on your natural hair color, you may consider using a blonde wig or spray-on hair color.
  2. Outfit: The quintessential Ken outfit consists of a red and white striped, short-sleeved shirt and light blue shorts. This beach-casual ensemble can typically be found or assembled easily from your local thrift stores or online.
  3. Shoes: Opt for a pair of casual white sneakers to complete the classic Ken look.
  4. Accessories: Consider adding a pair of sunglasses on your head or around your neck for that “Beach Fun Ken” vibe.

Formal Ken Look

If you’re seeking a more dressed-up version of Ken, the formal look is for you.

  1. Hair: Maintain the blonde, clean-cut hairstyle for consistency.
  2. Outfit: Look for a classic tuxedo with a black jacket, white shirt, black bow tie, and black trousers. You might want to add a red rose corsage to your lapel for extra flair.
  3. Shoes: Black formal shoes are a must for this look.
  4. Accessories: A small Barbie doll to act as your ‘plus one’ would perfectly complement this costume.

What is the Ryan Gosling Ken from “Barbie” Meme Based On?

Now, we’re getting our first look at Ryan Gosling as America’s boyfriend in which he plays as Ken, Barbie’s (Margot Robbie) on-and-off lover. This is the first live-action Barbie film at least that I can think of, and it’s directed by Greta Gerwig. The cutoff acid-wash jean vest and custom Calvin Klein-style “Ken” briefs may not be anything you’ve ever seen a Ken doll wear before.

Since almost ten years ago, the Barbie franchise has gone through several different directors and writers. IndieWire recalls that Diablo Cody was once on deck to write & direct Barbie, but that deal fell through. Then, Amy Schumer was set to star in a new version of the script written by Community producer Hilary Winston. (Source: GQ) IMO, Amy Schumer would make an awful Barbie–it would be too cynical of a take on the old franchise. Plus, she hasn’t got the beauty to underpin it. There’s a way to make things funny and ironic without going the Amy Schumer route.
